Kerrang!

In the five years since their last record, frontman Gene Louis has taken time out to pursue a more mellow solo career which has yielded an album (The Naked Truth) and a string of singles. But finally, his main band are back with their seventh work, and the good news is that they’re just as truculent as ever. Bad Mother Fucker and the title-track are combustible balls of punk fury and set the tone for the nine tracks that follow.

Singer Gene Louis is proud that he's made this thing work for two whole decades, as he should be. The seventh full-length album, Waking Up Dead, is due out this week — quite an achievement for a band that many expected to go quietly into the night when the RCA deal fell away. Band members have come and gone, as the band has evolved. The singer says, though, that the current lineup is the best yet.

Was it really 11 years ago that they came to my attention with their major label album 'In The Mouth Of The Young'? Like a sleazy Motörhead, they rocked their way into my life at a time when that was just what was needed. They sounded dangerous and pissed off...

Combining adrenaline-fueled tendencies of Hard Rock and Punk Rock, Bullets and Octane – Gene Louis (Vocals), Felipe Rodrigo (Guitar), Zachary Kibbee (Bass), and Jonny Udell (Drums) – have built a solid fan-base, mainly in California and Europe, ever since the band began touring in 1998. Over the years, Bullets and Octane have dished out eight albums, beginning with two EP’s, 2003’s One Night Stand Rock N’ Roll Band and 2004’s Bullets ‘N’ Octane. Garnering a noticeable buzz, Bullets and Octane made their major label debut with 2006’s In the Mouth of the Young released on Song BMG/RCA Records.

Although it's unlikely to win Bullets And Octane many new converts outside their existing fanbase, Waking Up Dead at least has an energy and snottiness which shows that they still actually give a damn about putting out decent quality music, which is more than can be said for some of their one-time compadres. Welcome back lads, looks like we might have missed you a bit more than we thought.

Most songs are built upon swift pacing, sharp riffs, and a big beat and groove from the rhythm section. Vocalist Gene Louis doesn't necessarily sing, but rather roars and rages with raspy intensity, while he's backed up by gang vocals from his band mates. Nevertheless, Louis' voice still carries the melody and harmony that lingers within each song. Guitarist Felipe Rodrigo is quick with slick harmonious guitar riffs, then ripping off thrilling guitar solos.

Bullets And Octane is a band that has its roots in St. Louis, Missouri and now based in Southern California. It's not a newbie in the hard rock scene. Having already released 7 full-length albums (!!!!) and an EP since their creation, back in 2003, Bullets And Octane are back with their brand new opus with the title "Waking Up Dead". After the very first spin of their new album, I have to say that I like it a lot. I would call it pissed off heavy rock stuff with attitude!!! Yes, these guys are pissed off and that's a thing that you will hear it in "Waking Up Dead".

Having had the fireball that was Bullets And Octane explode into his life a little more than a decade ago, and then disappear again just as quickly, the reviewer known as Bennyman was more than delighted to find out that not only had Bullets And Octane had re-appeared from out of nowhere with a new album that shows they’ve lost none of their fuck you attitude or lust for rock ‘n’ roll.

In 2018 they are looking to release the album “Waking Up Dead“. They are already slated to headline U.K. dates and Sweden dates in February to kick off the 20 Year anniversaryof the band with what has been touted as the most solid line up in it’s history.

The sound of bullets and octane can seem topically obvious to most that it is a rock ‘n’ roll band. When you dig a bit deeper there is definitely some jazz influence with some dynamics and arrangements. A sense of heavy punk influence with the lyrical delivery and attitude. There’s a fun useful sense of a boxing Match Trainwreck infused with a diverse and mature musical influence.

We’re touring the U.K. And Sweden again in February and planning more for later in the year. Including the release of “Waking Up Dead” 2018 is going to be a busy year! We’ve toured around the world with amazing bands like Social Distortion and Avenged Sevenfold. But keeping the band going for this long has to be our biggest accomplishment thus far.

Their live shows tend to stick pretty closely to their recorded material with a few exceptions to help keep their sets fresh and make it a memorable experience for fans. Touring never gets old for the band as it has led them to meet some of their die hard fans (some of which have Bullets tattoos in choice locations), meet and play with different bands, and see the world.
